Czech Open 2022 – final report

Czech Open 2022 - final report

October 15 – 16, 2022
Prague, Ladronka park
PDGA C-Tier

On the weekend of October 15-16, the nineteenth edition of the Czech Open disc golf tournament took place at Ladronka park in Prague. The event was attended by many of the Czech elite players who were joined with a number of foreign guests. Disc golfers came from Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Montenegro and the USA.

The permanent nine-hole course was expanded to a full 18 holes layout which really tested the abilities of all participants. Many players arrived on Friday to practice the course. The first two competition rounds took place on Saturday. The morning round was accompanied by light but persistent rain. It was convenient for everyone that they could dry off, warm up and eat well in the restaurant Usedlost Ladronka, which is a long-standing partner of the tournament which, in addition to great food, also provides space for the tournament center right in front of its gates. The second, afternoon round was noticeably drier, which was also reflected in generally better player performances.

Sunday’s third and final round was a different story – it was accompanied by sunny, warm weather and many players finished the tournament wearing only T-shirts and shorts.

The players competed in four categories. The junior category (MJ18) was the least numerous. It was mainly attended by players from Prague clubs, joined by the talented young German Jonas Bilke. He has already played at several Czech tournaments this year, where he successfully competed against experienced adult players. At the Czech Open, he proved his skill and won the category with a comfortable lead of 20 throws.

In the masters division (men over 40; MP40), the battle for the top spots was expected mainly from the local players, with Jiří „Jerry“ Brožek being the paper favorite. In the end, he ended up just under the podium, on which Martin Malý and the Estonian Sören Vetevool were standing. Petr „Héřa“ Haering became the winner by just one throw, as he was able to capitalize on his knowledge of his home course.

The female category had a clear favorite. Nikola Moravcová has had a great season, which she topped by winning the title of the Czech champion and left nothing to chance even at the Czech Open. Only Laura Nagtegaal from the Netherlands was able to come close to her. Martina Vajdová, another top Czech player, finished in third place.

Traditionally, the most attended was the Open category, in which mainly men under 40 start, but everyone else who wants to compete with the strongest players can sign in. Although the current Czech champion Bohdan Bílek withdrew from the tournament just a few days before the start, the roster remained full of quality players. Unfortunately, the next strongest player on paper and the winner of the recent Moravian Open, Jakub Knápek, did not finish the first round due to health problems and withdrew from the tournament. So Kuba Veselý, another player from Nový Jičín, the hotbed of disc golf talents, seized the chance. After two rounds, he had a lead of four throws and continued his solid performance in the third round. There, however, Kryštof Novák (from Nový Jičín, surprise surprise) began to put the pressure on him, but even 10 shots under par (the best round of the tournament) was not enough for him to catch up with Kuba. After a failed ace attempt on the last hole, he also had to go to play-off with Filip Conk, who also played excellently all weekend… here are the final results:
